Since The Allotment Act was amended in 1950, allotment holders have been allowed by law to keep HENS and RABBITS and erect structures to house them. There is no restriction on numbers of hens\/rabbits you can keep, but, if you allow your hens\/rabbits to become a noise nuisance, or you negelect them in any way, then you may fall “foul” of the law. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I have kept hens for about twelve years now and I feel it is imperative to obtain a treadle feeder for them. My treadle feeder holds around 10kg of feed (layers pellets), and ensures that rats do not become a problem. Should you scatter feed your hens, or use a gravity feeder, rats will become attracted to the free food supply and, as they breed quickly, you will shortly have a rat infestation, which, obviously, would become an environmental health hazard. You do have a legal right to keep hens, but, that legal right could be taken from you and you could face heavy fines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Having said all that, hens are easy to keep. Use a treadle feeder, and, if you want to store feed on your allotment, use a large, sealable, plastic bin (the ones with clips on the side). Don’t feed your hens on bread, because, that will certainly attract rats and, layers pellets are manufactured specifically to provide all your hens need for their health and the production of eggs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(1)Notwithstanding any provision to the contrary in any lease or tenancy or in any covenant, contract or undertaking relating to the use to be made of any land, it shall be lawful for the occupier of any land to keep, otherwise than by way of trade or business, hens or rabbits in any place on the land and to erect or place and maintain such buildings or structures on the land as reasonably necessary for that purpose:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
